IPF Distinctions Meeting

There will be a meeting of members going forward for IPF Distinctions on Tuesday 7th February at 8pm in Daly's Bar. Attendees should bring samples of printed work (6" x 4") for review.

Adobe Lightroom - Tuition

Jason Mallard has offered to conduct a series of classes in the use of Adobe Lightroom. Participating members should have a laptop with Lightroom 3 installed (Trial Version available to download HERE). Classes will take place from 8 - 10pm at St. Joseph's Resource Centre, Boyle on Thursday 16th & 23rd of February and Thursday 1st March. The cost for the 3 sessions is €15.00.

IPF NATIONAL NATURE COMPETITION 2012

MID-WEST REGIONAL QUALIFYING ROUND

(The competition is for INDIVIDUALS)

The Regional Qualifying Round will be held in Athlone Institute of Technology on Saturday 11th February (the same day as the Print & Projected Images Final).
Entrants may submit up to 3 colour prints and/or up to 3 digital projections.

Entry Fees:
One category - €10
Two categories - €15

Entrants must submit prints / disc with images, entry form and entry fee by 10.30 am on Sat. 11th February.
Images will be judged on the day and the top 60% of entries in each category will qualify for the national finals.

Prints must be mounted on 20”x16” card, and must be no smaller than 10”x8” and no larger than 16”x12”.

Digital images must be saved as JPEGs and must be max. 2400 pixels on the longest side.
The files must be named in the following format;

Club_photographer_Image Number (no gaps)
e.g. Mullingarcc_A.N.Other_01

The NATIONAL FINALS will be held in the Westport Leisure Park Auditorium on Saturday 10th March - Judge: Colin Stafford Johnson.

National Club Championships

The date has been set for the 2012 National Club Championships, which return to the midlands this May.
This year’s National Club Championships will take place on May 19th & 20th at Athlone Institute of Technology.
This major weekend event will see clubs from around the country battle it out for the Rose Bowl and the honour of being named as the top photography club in the country. There will also be a distinctions sitting over the two-day event.
Rules and entry forms for the National Club Championships will be posted soon, as will the full programme of events for the weekend. Further details on the distinctions applications process will also be posted as soon as they become available.

Photo Shoot - Roscommon 22nd January 2012

The first photo shoot of the year took place in Roscommon Town on Sunday. Led by Desmond O'Dwyer, members initially spent some time about the majestic ruins of Roscommon Castle and after some well deserved refreshments at Gleeson's Cafe, continued to the beautiful Sacred Heart Church. Thanks to Desmond for organising the day which went on much longer than anticipated ... we simply didn't find the time passing. Participating members are encouraged to send a selection of their best images to info@boylecameraclub.com. Members photos can be seen HERE.

Meeting for Members going forward for IPF Distinctions

Their will be a meeting in Daly’s Bar, Boyle at 8pm on Tuesday 24th January for members interested in going forward for the IPF licentiateship. Members should bring a selection of images they hope to include in their panel in printed format - 6" x 4" for critique and discussion. Advice on assembling a panel of 10 images will be the priority. Attendants will decide on the night the frequency of follow-up meetings. We hope to have interested members ready to submit for the next IPF licentiate award sitting.

52/52 BOYLE CAMERA CLUB PHOTO CHALLENGE

At the January Club Meeting, the Advanced Group discussed the possibility of opening a 52/52 Photo Challenge for club members.

Basically, a 52/52 challenge requires participating members to take ONE PHOTO PER WEEK for all 52 weeks of the year and post them on Flickr. Photos will be compiled in a ‘Set’ on members personal Flickr sites and the completed portfolio of 52 photos reviewed at the end of the challenge.

The aim of the challenge is to encourage members to make a conscious effort to take more photos and develop a habit of posting them regularly. Members can decide to follow a definite theme over the course of the challenge or simply compile a visual diary, the choice is up to the individual photographer. Should anyone wish to consider a thematic approach, here are some I have seen used in the past; The Bridges of Ireland, The Water Pumps of Ireland, The Royal Canal, Self-Portraits, Barmaids of Dundalk, Irish Forged Gates …. the variety is endless. Remember, a theme is NOT necessary but it can be helpful if motivation or inspiration is flagging.

Participants should attempt to present their images appropriately, not just snap-shots but effectively edited (colour-corrected and composed) and titled.

We hope to commence the challenge at the beginning of February with interested members registering their intention to participate on the CLUB FORUM. See rules of the challenge there also.

Should you decide to participate, your first submission must be posted by mid-night on FRIDAY 3rd FEBRUARY and subsequently every Friday for the following 52 weeks!

Summer Weekend Photo Shoot - CLARE ISLAND

Keeping with the tradition of Island locations, this year Boyle Camera Club's Summer Photo Shoot will take place on Clare Island, Co. Mayo from Friday 25th to Sunday 27th May.

Previous trips included Achill, Inis Oirr and Inishbofin, all of which were hugely successful and enjoyable events. The annual weekend photo shoot not only provides an opportunity for members to indulge their passion for photography but is equally an important social event where like-minded photography enthusiasts can enjoy the beauty of our native countryside.

To assist with planning the event, we need members to express their intention to participate by including their name on the related thread in the Club Forum HERE. Details of accommodation, ferry times and costs will follow once we can determine numbers. I hope as many people as possible can attend.

Club Meeting - Tuesday 10th January

Presentation

Pictorial and Photographic Composition was the theme of this month's presentation. Tony Murphy discussed the issue under the headings of formal and informal approaches to composing images. He started by defining the Golden Ratio and it's relationship to organising lines, shapes and forms in architecture, art and product design - from the time of the ancient Egyptians right up to today. The Rule of Thirds and Diagonals, Lead-in Lines and other devices were mentioned along with Depth of Field, Symmetry and Contrast - all these have their part to play in effective Composition. As enthusiast photographers, Tony encouraged members to consider some of the rules mentioned and also explore ways to break them!

Group Sessions

The Advanced Group discussed initiating a photography challenge that would see participating members take and post on-line, one image each week for a year, beginning in February. Details will be posted in the club Forum where anyone interested can sign up. There will be a €5 entry fee and the completed portfolio of images will be judged externally for a prize when 52 weeks are completed.

In addition to this, some interesting future Motivation themes were identified, among them; a disposable film camera challenge and photoshop make over where all members would get the same photo to process in an imaginative way.

The Beginners and Intermediate Groups discussed the new Motivation categories in an attempt to establish their positions for subsequent motivation submissions.

Photo Shoot

The photo shoot this month is to Roscommon Town. As the Sacred Heart Church is one of the main venues and mass times will prohibit early access, departure time from Boyle will be 10am. Meet on the Crescent in Boyle for car-pooling. It is hoped to take in Roscommon Castle also and arrive at the Sacred Heart Church for 1.30pm approximately.

Are you a budding photographer looking to break into sport photography?

Responding to a rapid growth in the sport of triathlon, Triathlon Ireland are seeking photographers on a voluntary basis to ensure the ongoing exposure and support of their races.

Triathlon Ireland is aiming to establish a network of voluntary photographers who will support races throughout the country in the same spirit as race organisers, race marshals and other volunteers. This role will provide keen sports photographers access to triathlon events, and open up networking opportunities for like minded photographers with an interest in sports photography.

There will be triathlon photography workshops held for interested photographers.

Swim / Splish-Splash Photo Shoot - 26th December

There is a charity Swim / Splish-Splash for Chernobyl - taking place in Portrun (outside Roscommon Town) on Monday 26th December at 1pm.

All are welcome to come and take photos and/or take part.

The event will be raising money for the Burren Chernobyl Project and club member, Rita Oates is one of four Roscommon people traveling to Goradische Orphanage in Belarus to volunteer with this charity in January.

There are 28 people going for a swim so far so it promises to be a fun event and possibly a good photo shoot opportunity!

The meeting very much followed the proposed agenda. After the chairperson's address, Tony Murphy discussed the revised Motivation Categories for members, defining the criteria for Beginners, Intermediate and Advanced groups. It is hoped that these guidelines will make it easier for new (and existing) members to decide on their motivation group based on their level of photographic competency and experience.

John and Desmond presented this year's club calendar to members. They were appropriately commended for the great effort involved in bringing this project to a completed stage. The calendar is a testament to the fine work done by club members during the year. There are still some calendars available, anyone wishing to acquire one or more can contact John HERE.

Group Sessions

Tony Murphy introduced Advanced members to the basics of using a single flash head and soft-box with reflectors to make a studio portrait. The aim here was to encourage members to use the club's studio lighting system and develop confidence. Tony took a direct and simple approach based on prescribed camera and lighting settings which guaranteed results. This was accessible to all members. Emphasis was placed on understanding how a flash head works, how to adjust the settings and maintain the kit. Tony may run a similar session for Intermediate members at the January meeting.

Joe Kennedy, Jason Mallard and Paraic Brennan brought the Beginners and Intermediate groups together to address issues of resizing images for submission to the monthly motivation. They also addressed some basic editing issues and the application of 'textures' for artistic effect. In light of the revised distinctions in the motivation categories, it is important that members correctly resize and title their submissions. Members should familiarise themselves with the MOTIVATION RULES for clarification.

Photo Shoots

There were no formal arrangements made for Photo Shoots over the Christmas period, however if any members are intending to organise a group specific shoot, they should notify the club secretary in advance. Members can promote their shoot via posting on the club Forum.

Club Calendar 2012

John and Desmond will present the club’s calendar for 2012 to members at this month’s meeting. The calendar contains predetermined dates for important events such as club meetings, sunrise/sunset times and moon phase. There are also monthly photography tips to clarify aspects of photographic terminology and technique. Calendars cost €8.00 each or 3 for €22.00 and are only available through the club.

Motivation

The Motivation theme this month is DOCUMENTARY Photography. Joe will present this month’s submissions that were judged by photojournalist, Brian Farrell. View members images HERE.

As we begin a new club year, we are redefining the categories for Advanced, Intermediate and Beginners. The committee have prepared a document that outlines the distinctions between each category and will be presenting it to members after Joe's presentation. Categories Document available HERE.

The redefined Motivation categories will take effect from January 2012. Existing and new members should read the document and indicate their category on renewing their membership for 2012.

Group Sessions

Rather than a general presentation, at this month’s meeting there will be an extended period given over to Group sessions.

Tony will take the Advanced group and reintroduce members to using the club’s studio lights. These have recently been repaired and it is envisaged that advanced members become familiar with using them. The club is currently in the process of acquiring a set of studio backdrops and hanging frame that will be available for loan in the new year.

Joe will take the Intermediate group and Paraic will address some issues relating to the basics to image processing for Beginner members.

The groups will also determine dates for group specific photo shoots over the Christmas period if desirable.

The club meeting takes place on Tuesday 13th December in St. Joseph’s Resource Centre, Boyle at 8pm.

Conn's Cameras Monthly Photo Competition - AUTUMN

Conn's Cameras have announced this month's theme for their monthly photo competition. Photographers are asked to submit ONE photo only on the theme of 'Autumn' by posting to their GROUP POOL on the Conns Cameras Flickr site. Unlike last month's competition where the winner was determined by a Facebook popularity vote, the November competition will be judged by photographer Dave McKane of the Institute of Photography.

Entries must be posted by 5pm on Monday 21st November.

Just to clarrify one thing - entries must be posted to the group pool AND the specific competition thread so please make sure your photographs appear in both.

Presentation

Internationally renowned Photoshop expert Guy Gowan will give a presentation at this month's club meeting. Anyone that has attended one of Guy's acclaimed workshops will not fail to be impressed by this man and his knowledge of image editing and printing processes. Now based in Sligo, we are delighted that he will share some of his expertise with us.

Motivation

The Motivation theme this month is MACRO Photography. Joe Kennedy will present and critique this month's entries. View members images HERE.

As we begin this new club year, we will be redefining the categories for Advanced, Intermediate and Beginners. The committee have prepared an document that outlines the distinctions between each category and will be presented to members after Joe's presentation. Members will have the opportunity to consider their position in this regard with effect for the December Motivation.

IPF NPPI Regional Round

Boyle Camera Club hosted the regional round of the NPPI competition at Lough Key Forest Park on Sunday 6th November. The club was very well represented and participating members will be presented with their IPF certificates at this month's meeting.

Groups

Advanced, Intermediate and Beginners will meet briefly to address relevant issues and arrange appropriate photo shoots over the coming months.

IPF REGIONAL MEETING & NPPI Competition - Forest Park Boyle, Sunday 6th November.

Clew Bay Sunset by Tony Murphy

Boyle Camera Club facilitated the Regional Meeting of 6 camera clubs from the Mid-West Region affiliated to the Irish Photographic Federation at Lough Key Forest Park on Sunday 6th November.

This was a great opportunity to get camera clubs together to network and kick start the establishment of regional rounds for many of the IPF competitions and future inter-regional events. It was also an opportunity to showcase the Forest Park Visitor Centre, Boyle and its many attractions.

Regional Council
The meeting elected 3 officers to the Irish Photographic Federation Regional Council, the Mid-Western elected officers are; Caroline Harney - Midlands Camera club, Andy Rimmer and Paraic Brennan both of Boyle Camera Club.

National Print & Projected Images Competition
The Regional qualifying round of the National Print & Projected Images competition was run on the day. The NPPI competition is open to individual photographers from each club who submit images in print and digital format. Boyle had a clean sweep in the Coastal Ireland section and took eleven prizes over-all, in 6 different categories. Boyle Camera Club was represented by Tony Murphy, Joe Kennedy, Brian Munnelly, John Walshe and Geoffrey Percy. Prize winners will be presented with IPF Certificates at the next club meeting.

This was Boyle Camera Club's first formal engagement with the IPF and we would like to thank all members that turned up to help out with the organisation and management of the event at Forest Park. As a consequence, the day went smoothly and to schedule. We would like to extend our gratitude also to Louise and Lough Key Forest Park staff for facilitating the event.

We are very proud of all our participants in the NPPI Competition and Boyle Camera Club, for the first time, will be very well represented at the National Finals of the NPPI competition next February.

Meeting for Members going forward for IPF Distinctions

There will be a meeting next TUESDAY, 1st NOVEMBER at 8pm in DALY'S BAR, BOYLE for members that intend to go forward for IPF Licentiate Distinctions this year. All those interested should attend. The IPF have agreed to send a representative to discuss the distinctions process in the run-up to the IPF Distinctions event in Thurles on 26th November.

BCC to Publish It's First Calendar for 2012

At a recent Committee Meeting it was suggested that the Club would produce a calendar for 2012 featuring photos submittted by club members during the year for the various Motivations and Exhibitions. Design and layout are presently at an advanced stage. Space is limited and we are trying to represent the work of all active members of the club. The design is likely to feature one larger shot and two to three smaller sized images for each month. Members will be contacted to provide full resolution files by a member of the committee and we would ask that members return files by e-mail before a specified date to facilitate the printing schedule (to take place before Christmas). The Calendar will be A3 in size and retail at €8 - €10 each. More details will follow at the November Meeting.

Boyle Town & More are hosting an EXTRAVAGANZA WEEKEND during this October Bank Holiday, Friday 28th - Sunday 30th.

A schedule packed with events has been prepared to celebrate all that is good about Boyle, it's businesses, amenities and it's people. Boyle Camera Club will be represented by an Exhibition of Photographs in the main gallery at King House (open to the public on Friday and Saturday only).

The organisers have asked Boyle Camera Club if it's members would take photos to record the various events over the three days. With a view to putting together a coordinated effort, we invite members to express their interest in attending and recording some of the events on the schedule, to sign-up via the CLUB FORUM.

This will be an excellent opportunity for ALL to practice their 'Street Photography' and 'Photojournalistic' skills. We hope to be able to put a collection of images together on behalf of Boyle Camera Club to present to the event organisers.

Boyle Camera Club will host a Regional Meeting of the 20 camera clubs from the Mid-West Region affiliated to the Irish Photographic Federation at Lough Key Forest Park on Sunday 6th November.

This will be a great opportunity to get clubs together to network and start the ball rolling on establishing regional rounds for many of the IPF competitions and for future inter-regional events.

The meeting will be concerned with electing officers to the Regional Council and will run the Regional qualifier of the National Print & Projected Images competition. The NPPI competition is open to INDIVIDUAL photographers from each club who can submit images in printed or digital format. There are a number of different categories;

Open Category - 3 images per category

Colour & Monochrome Prints and Projected Images.

Themed Categories - 2 images per category

Costal Ireland - Colour Prints only
Irish Environmental Portraiture - Monochrome Prints only
People - Digital Projected Images only

Note to BCC Members

This is our first formal engagement with the IPF and we are delighted to welcome it's representatives and members from other camera clubs to Boyle. Members from Boyle Camera Club are encouraged to take part in the NPPI competition. There are very specific guidelines outlined for entries. In summary, prints should be accommodated inside a mounted board 20" x 16" and actual print size should not be greater than 192 square inches (as a rough guide, this means a printed photograph no bigger than 16" x 12" contained in a mount 20" x 16"). Entries are NOT to be framed behind glass.

Projected Images will be judged from 12.00pm and Printed Images from 2.00pm.

The Agenda for the IPF Regional Meeting is as follows;

Maeve Cormican, Desmond O'Dwyer and Joe Kennedy winners of Boyle Camera Club's 'Photographer of The Year' awards 2011. The awards were presented at the club's AGM which was held at St. Joesph's Resource Centre, Boyle on Tuesday 11th October.

AGM Business

Reports from the club Chairperson - Kit O'Connor, Secretary - Paraic Brennan and Treasurer - Andy Rimmer, were presented to members.

Chairperson's Report

Kit remarked on the many successful events that the club ran during the year and praised the commitment and dedication of the committee that supported him. Gratitude was extended in particular to those who helped in setting up the numerous and successful exhibitions. He mentioned that the changes to the Monthly Club Meeting format where Beginners, Intermediate and Advanced Groups splinter to address relevant issues, had worked well.

Secretary's Report

Paraic also mentioned the many enjoyable events hosted by the club throughout the year. He regretted that he wasn’t able to make the Inis Boffin trip but hoped we might make another island trip this year. Paraic reported that this was the club's best year to date in terms of activities and that it is going from strength to strength. The success of the Summer Exhibition and the current exhibition at the Dock Gallery, is an impressive 'feather in our cap'. He also mentioned the importance of the club's forthcoming exhibition at King House in association with 'Better Boyle' which will open over the Bank Holiday Weekend.

Treasurer's Report

Andy gave a comprehensive report on the club's financial and general administrative affairs. The club's accounts are in a very healthy state. He commented that the club has had an increase of 25% in membership over last year's figure. He mentioned that the average Club meeting attendance is running at 39 members and monthly photoshoots average 19 members.

Election of Officers

All members of the current committee agreed to sit for another term.

In addition to the current committee, two new officers, John Walshe and Desmond O'Dwyer, were elected.

Presentation

After refreshments, generously provided by Veronica O'Connor, Tony Murphy gave a slide presentation on the 'History and Background of Street Photography'.

Joel Meyerowitz

This was a whistle-stop tour of the great European and American photographers of the 20th century with particular emphasis on the work of Atget, Lartigue, Cartier-Bresson, Brassai, Doisneau, Weegee, Klein, Winogrand, Eggleston, Parr and Joel Meyerowitz. Tony wanted to encourage members to submit to the Street photography Competition being held this month by Conn's Cameras in Dublin. Closing date 21st October.

Photographer of The Year Awards

The meeting concluded with the presentation of the Boyle Camera Club - Photographer of The Year Awards. The winners are as follows;

Beginners - Maeve Cormican.
Intermediate - Desmond O'Dwyer.
Advanced - Joe Kennedy.

Boyle Town and More - BCC Exhibition - King House

Boyle Town and More are organising a series of events over the October Bank Holiday weekend. A detailed list of events can be viewed HERE.

Boyle Camera Club will be participating with an exhibition of photographs in King House which will be open to the public on Friday 28th and Saturday 29th October. Members are encouraged to visit the exhibition and take part in what promises to be a very special, activity filled weekend! We wish the organisers every success with this event that will certainly showcase the very best of Boyle.

Other issues

A full list of photo shoots will be posted here shortly. The photo shoot scheduled for last weekend in Sligo was cancelled and members are hoping to run the shoot this weekend. See FORUM for updates.

Motivation

No Flashing! Beginners Photo Shoot - 8th October

This morning's photo shoot at St. Joseph's Resource Centre in Boyle was a fun and informative event pitched at Beginners level. Participating members explored the potential of natural and reflected light with the help of two very cooperative models, Loretta and Jack. Thanks also to Maeve for bringing the costumes and refreshments. The venue is an excellent resource and we hope to make better use of it in the future.

Does the decline of print media necessarily mean the end for photojournalism?

Canon would like to invite you to meet award winning photographer, Kieran Dodds on Friday 14th October, who will be discussing the changes, opportunities and threats faced by photojournalism.

Kieran will share his experiences adapting the storytelling tradition to the new media landscape and consider how stills photographers are creating meaningful stories. The talk will cover how to break into photojournalism, how to stand out from the crowd and how the business is responding to the increased supply of work.

Kierans presentation will also include a slide show of his award winning shots and culminate with a Q&A.

Conn's Cameras Monthly Photography Competition

Conns Cameras have just started their first monthly Photography Competition. The theme for October is STREET PHOTOGRAPHY. Club members with an interest in this area are encouraged to enter. Submissions to the competition should be posted via Conn's Cameras Flickr Group Pool.

Some club members made the most of the beautiful evening light about Boyle when they visited Ardcarn Church and cemetery. As always, Sligo was very respectfully represented - well done lads for making the effort:-) Members are reminded that there are two photo shoots scheduled in the coming week;

Birr Castle Photo Shoot - 25th September

Nine members of the club attended this event last Sunday. Thanks to Eamon, our driver for the day. We got to Birr at 12 pm - just in time for breakfast for Joe and Gerry! Unfortunately the Balloons didn't fly as scheduled due to strong winds. As we
had access to the Birr Castle Demesne we busied ourselves shooting landscapes and portraits - see a selection on the club Flickr site HERE. We lost Martina Morris for a while but luckily she caught up before we left for home. Thanks to Martina for the sandwiches which we enjoyed on the way home with a stop at Kilmartins Garage in Athlone for a welcome cup of tea.

Club Meeting - 13th September 2011

Boyle Camera Club Chairperson, Kit O'Connor presents Martina Morris of TOUCH Ireland with a cheque for €600 from the proceeds of the club's recent photography exhibition at Boyle Library. Also in the photo are committee members Debbie McCormack and Andrew Rimmer.

Our first club meeting of the Autumn season kicked off with an excellent presentation by club member Desmond O'Dwyer. Desmond has been exploring the possibilities of HDR photography for some time and his well researched and delivered presentation went some way to clarifying the pros and cons of this post production technique. Not one to sit on the fence regarding photography issues, Desmond's generosity in sharing his experience in this field was well received by members, even those that have a 'love/hate' relationship with HDR photography. For members that missed the meeting, Desmond has offered to make his presentation available on-line HERE.

BCC Exhibition at The Dock

The Dock exhibition was selected from over 120 photos submitted by members. In a slideshow presentation, the photos that will not be hanging on the gallery walls were reviewed and an informal critique took place on a selection of the photos. With regard to the exhibition, prints are now at the gallery, the posters and catalogues are printed and members should now be considering what they will wear on the big night of Friday 23rd September to the opening! We look forward to seeing everyone there.

Group Discussions

Advanced, Intermediate and Beginners groups met to arrange photo shoots in the coming weeks.

Advanced Group;

Thursday 29th September - Low-light shoot. Meeting at 6.00pm, Ardcarn Church (between Boyle and Carrick-on-Shannon on the N4). Some blue-hour work in the adjacent cemetery followed by a visit to the church. Our gratitude to the Gillespie Family for granting access.

Intermediate Group;

9th October. Meet at Rathcormack School Car Park, at 9.30am. Car pool from there to Hazelwood and surrounding areas of interest. Ideal opportunity for Macro work. Depending on time, peoples availability and interest we can move on to other areas for photographic opportunities. All are welcome. Interested parties respond to this post in the club forum HERE.

Beginners Group;

Tony Murphy discussed how to use a compact camera to take close-up and macro photos. Members are expected to put this into action in this month's motivation. The beginners group will be meeting in early October for an indoor natural light still-life and portraiture shoot. Maeve has kindly offered to bring some theatrical costumes so this one should be a bit of fun! Date and time for the beginners shoot to be decided. All members welcome.

National Hot Air Balloon Championships Photo Shoot in Birr

A contingent from the club will attend this event on Sunday 25th September. Presently, Andy is looking into hiring a bus. Weather permitting, this should be an excellent day out with club members having full photography access to Birr Castle estate. A New Season Begins at Boyle Camera Club

Congratulations to Andy Rimmer, winner of the prize for the Best Landscape Photograph at the Castlerea Show recently.

As we prepare to return to ‘business as usual’ after the summer break, the committee wish to bring members up to date with current issues and events.

We have been very busy behind the scenes these past few months; reprinting and distrubiting the photos sold during our Arts Festival exhibition and preparing for our forthcoming exibition at The Dock later this month.

Our exhibition in Boyle Library was very well received, a sincere thank you to all participating members and the organisers of the event, in particularly The Boyle Arts Festival Committee and Boyle Library staff. The public comment book bares testiment to the appreciation of the many visitors who viewed the work. At this point, we have distributed all the photos that were sold and will be making a presentation to TOUCH Ireland on behalf of all our members in the coming weeks.

With regard to our exhibition at The Dock Gallery in Carrick-on-Shannon, members photos were delivered to the printer this week. We will present 30 photos to The Dock for hanging in The Jury Room on Monday 12th September. The formal opening of the exhibition will take place on Friday 23rd September at 5.30pm as part of National Culture Night. We are honoured and delighted that the internationally celebrated photographer, Mike Bunn, has accepted our invitation to open the exhibition. Members are encouraged to bring their family and friends along to the opening.

We will have our next club meeting on Tuesday 13th September. We look forward to seeing you all at this, the beginning of our autumn season. We will post the agenda for the meeting shortly.

One of the items that will be discussed is our AGM which takes place in October. Members interested in putting themselves forward for positions on the new committee should make their intentions known to the club secretary at our next meeting. The nomination and election of officers will take place at the AGM.

Evening Photo Shoot at Carrowkeel

Holidays me Granny!! This evenings photo shoot ended up at Carrowkeel, Co. Sligo. The lack of decent light and threat of rain did not deter this enthusiastic group. Not a great night for photography but a worthwhile exercise in learning about the locality and archaeological treasures of the Boyle area. All in all, a very enjoyable evening in the company of good friends.

The Dock in Carrick-on-Shannon have contacted us regarding our upcoming exhibition there in September and we now have to move things forward.

We wish members to submit New or Alternative work (alternative to our present exhibition at Boyle Library).

Members need to notify us of their intention to participate by posting a 'reply' in the related item in the CLUB FORUM. Only members responding to the forum post will be considered for the exhibition.

A meeting is scheduled for THURSDAY next at 7pm 4th August in Daly's Bar, Boyle to discuss Framing /Cost etc. All interested parties must attend otherwise we will understand you are not interested. There will be no second chance to participate as this event is prestigous and an important event for our club and will take a lot of organising.

Club Meeting - 12th July 2011

At this month's meeting, Tony Murphy addressed the issue of RAW v JPEG. The presentation focused on the characteristics of various image file formats, including TIFF and the advantages and disadvantages of each. Tony also went through the motions of editing a RAW file and compared it to a JPEG equivalent that was processed in-camera.

Motivation

This month's Motivation theme was 'FOOD'. Paraic Brennan passed judgement on members submissions and presented his critique during the meeting. The colour and variety of images this month was exceptional, with particular flair being demonstrated by many new members. Paraic's results are listed below;

Recent Group Photo Shoots

Last week was another busy week for Boyle Camera Club. The Beginners Group met on Thursday 23rd of June for a photoshoot in Daly's Bar on Bridge Street concentrating on "Pub and Low Light photography" led by Tony Murphy.

The Advanced Group met on Thursday the 30th of June for a photo session on "Studio Lighting". Jason Mallard kindly led this group. Everyone got a chance to take a shot or two while other members of the group took it in turns to pose for the photographers. Thanks to Peter Kelly for the studio lights, Conor Dowling for the backdrop and Jason for the photo tips.

The Intermediate Group met on Tuesday the 28th for a photoshoot in Lough Key Forest Park on "Camera Controls" the photoshoot was led by Peter Kelly.

The Club Committee are currently busy putting together their selection for the Summer Exhibition in conjunction with the Boyle Arts Festival. From the previews it looks like this years Summer Exhibition will be the best to date!

SUMMER EXHIBITION - LAST CALL FOR PHOTOS

Preparations for our Annual Club Exhibition are now firmly underway. The closing date for submission of photos to be included in the exhibition was Friday 24th June. Any member that has not yet made a submission should do so as soon as possible as photos are currently being selected and prepared for printing and framing. All submissions should be accompanied by the framing fee of €12.00.

Sunrise on The Bricklieve Mountains

Seven brave souls sacrificed a decent night's sleep to romp around the Bricklieve Mountains this morning. It was well worth the effort, if not for the photography, but the joy of sharing one of natures great mysteries in the company of good friends.

Club Meeting - Tuesday 14th June

This month, our guest presenter Brian Farrell, attracted a full and very appreciative audience. Brian picked a selection of choice photojournalistic images from his vast back catalogue to illustrate the nature of his finely tuned craft. His work read like a whose who in the national and international celebrity arena over the past 40 years and each image told it's own story. In fact, that was the point! The quality of his pictures was matched by the energy and enthusiasm conveyed in his descriptions of photos of great poignancy, joy and historical significance. A rare treat for us indeed and we are proud to have adopted him as one of our own here in Boyle. We are sincerely grateful Brian, thank you.

Summer Exhibition

Members are reminded to submit their 3 images by FRIDAY 24th JUNE for the club's Annual Photography Exhibition in conjunction with Boyle Arts Festival, 21st - 30th July. Submissions can be based on any subject or theme, the only stipulation is that no more than one of the three images can be a landscape. Members should put High Resolution files on a CD or Memory Stick and deliver it to Louise at The Greenway Emporium, Market Yard, Boyle (Map HERE) or post to Margaret Dolan, (Abbeytown, Boyle).

Submission Fee of €12.00 should accompany the CD. This will cover print, mount and framing costs. Committee members will select one image per member for the exhibition. All submissions will be presented on a slideshow during the exhibition. Proceeds from the will be donated on your behalf to TOUCH Ireland.

Group Sessions

At this month's meeting, members split briefly into groups to arrange a schedule for Group Specific Photo Shoots in the coming weeks. The schedule is as follows;

Beginners; Meet in Daly's Bar, Boyle at 7.00pm on Thursday 23rd June. Members will explore the challenges and possibilities of 'pub-light'. Bring a tripod if you have one.

Beginners, don't forget to bring in one or two of your PRINTED photos for an informal critique during the Groups Session at the July meeting. T

Intermediate; Meet at Lough Key Forest Park Centre at 8.00pm, Tuesday 28th June.

Advanced; Meet at St. Joseph's Resource Centre, Boyle at 7.30pm, Thursday 30th June for a workshop on using studio lights.

Dawn Solstice Photo Shoot - Sunday 19th June

As the Summer Solstice approaches, we thought it might be interesting (and challenging) to test members commitment by asking them to assemble at 4.00am on Sunday 19th June to attempt to shoot the rising sun from the tombs at Carrowkeel! We are aware that the actual solstice will not take place until the 21st of June but it would be difficult to expect members to participate in this during the week.

Anyone mad enough to partake in this should meet at the garage in Castlebaldwin at 4am to car-pool and proceed to the tombs. Bring warm cloths, a flask and breakfast, flashlight and of course a camera (tripod would be helpful too). Good luck with that!:-)

Lunar Eclipse - Wednesday 15th June

We are being encouraged to look to the skies tomorrow night (WEDNESDAY 15th JUNE), to catch a glimpse of the last lunar eclipse over Ireland for four years.

The sky will begin to get dark at about 9.50pm, and the eclipse will follow 10 minutes later, turning the moon red.

People in the east of the country will see the moon rise a deep red colour, while for anyone watching in the west, most of the moon will be blacked out by the earth's shadow.

We will not have another chance to see the moon eclipsed until 2015.

Brian is a freelance photojournalist based in County Sligo and working from Ireland's North West region. From 1986-1996 Brian was a Staff Photographer with The Irish Independent based in Dublin and traveling Ireland and Europe on news assignments. From 1996-2003 He was Photographic Editor with Ireland's biggest selling newspaper, The Sunday Independent, while continuing so shoot fashion and features for the paper. In 2003 he moved to County Sligo from where he freelances on a commission basis, covering news, features and fashion for all Ireland's National Newspapers and National and International Photo Agencies while also contributing to the regional papers. He has won several Press Photographers awards in the portraits, arts, picture essay and politics categories. He now has a substantial client base in PR and Event photography.

Members from the Beginners Group of Boyle Camera Club met tonight at the Gaelic Chieftain on the N4 outside Boyle to be eaten by persistent swarms of midges ... and take a few photos too. This informal session gave newcomers to the club the opportunity to get to know other club members. Our gratitude to Meave for providing refreshments on the evening. The anticipated dramatic sunset that seemed likely during the day did not materialise, none the less it was a productive shoot where issues relating to composition was the main item addressed. The club intend to have many more Group specific sessions like this during the Summer months, so watch this space.

Photography Ireland 2012 Yearbook

Closing Date - 01 July 2011

Camera Club members are invited to submit images for inclusion in the Photography Ireland 2012 yearbook.

As in previous years Irish amateur and professional photographers are invited to submit images for the 2012 edition of Photography Ireland. Friends and distinction holders of the Irish Photographic Federation and Irish photographers living abroad may also submit entries. Images in the book will be in both colour and monochrome. The closing date for entries has been extended to 1st July 2011.

Photographers may submit up to five images in colour, and five in monochrome. Images should preferably be submitted on a CD or DVD as 300 dpi actual size TIFF or high quality JPG images suitable for printing up to A4 size. Colour corrections should be made and each image accompanied by a small print, minimum size 10 cm X 15 cm, (4" X 6") to aid selection.

A completed copy of the entry form must be taped to the back of each print. The entry form can be downloaded from the IPF website or by clicking on this link Photography Ireland 2012.

Congratulations to Boyle Camera Club member Martina Morris. Over 3000 people entered and over half a million votes were cast over the course of the Danone - Photo Competition that took place earlier this year. The aim of this competition was to encourage the people of Ireland to get out there and enjoy life to the full and capture a winter moment that was full of life. Martina’s picture depicts the vibrancy of outdoor family pet fun, they are the perfect excuse to get active & get healthy at that time of year!

Club Meeting - Tuesday 10th May

This was another busy, full-schedule event which took place on the eve of the club's departure to Inishbofin for it's annual weekend photo shoot. There were a number of potential new members visiting for the first time. Phil and Rose, representatives from Mohill Camera Club, were also welcomed.

Straight to business with an overview of the Boyle Camera Club Members Forum. All members are advised to register and contribute to this lively space.

Tony Murphy delivered this month's presentation on the subject of lenses. Part one of a two-part series that addressed; focal length, lens types & categories and touched briefly on the value of specialist lenses like macro and tilt-shift. No doubt, this subject will need to be covered in greater depth at a later stage.

Motivation

This month's Motivation theme was Movement. Former club Chairperson, Sean O'Dowd judged and critiqued entries at the meeting. He rigidly adhered to the criteria prescribed for each category and put emphasis firstly on applying the rules and principles of photographic composition & treatment and on the other hand, commended those that understood these principles and had the courage to break them for creative and artistic intent. He commended members for their work and expressed the value of having a monthly Motivation and it's important contribution to helping members develop new skills and challenge their understanding of the craft of photography. Sean's results are listed below.

At this month's meeting, members split into groups to arrange a schedule for Group Specific Photo Shoots in the coming weeks. The schedule is as follows;

Beginners; Meet at the Gaelic Chieftain at 7.30pm on Tuesday 24th May. Everyone will need a tripod.

Intermediate; Meet at the Docking Area for Moon River (opposite the Landmark Hotel) Carrick-on-Shannon at 7.00pm on Thursday 19th May. Everyone will need a tripod.

Advanced; Meet at the St. Joseph's Resource Centre, Boyle for car-pool to Carrick-on-Shannon at 7.00pm on Thursday 19th May. A 'strobist' shoot is planned to take place on the boardwalk in front of the Landmark Hotel. Everyone will need a tripod and speedlight (radio-triggers optional). Members are advised to know in advance how to use their speedlights remotely (consult camera manual).

Other Issues

Inishbofin Weekend Photo Shoot May 2011.

Boyle Camera Club members basked in island sunshine this weekend during their third annual Summer Photo Shoot. A contingent of 16 enthusiastic photographers (above) explored beautiful Inishbofin off the coast of Galway. Blessed once again with great weather and light, a splendid time was had by all. The committee would like to extend a special word of thanks to Pat Coyne and the staff at The Dolphin Hotel for their warm and friendly reception and to Peter Boalch, who organised yet another memorable and excellent event.

Members participating in the annual Weekend Away Photo Shoot to Inishbofin this weekend should note that ferry times from Cleggan (map above for route via Westport but some may prefer to travel via Roscommon - Galway - Clifden), Co. Galway are as follows;

Departure Cleggan Harbour, Friday 13th May - 11am, 2pm and 7.30pm.

Cost is €17.00 return for BCC Members. Car-pooling is encouraged for those leaving on Friday from Boyle. Allow at least 2.5 hours for the journey.

One Day in the Life of the World

We recently received an invitation to take part in ‘One Day in the Life of the World’. It is a global photographic project with random people, taking random photos on a random day (May 6th).

The basic idea is that thousands of people all over the world take photos of something, someone or somewhere that they love, and then submit those photos into our website to create a snapshot of the world on that day, for everybody in the world to explore and enjoy forever.

Evening Shoot - 3rd May

Many members took part in this evening's photo shoot about Boyle. This was an experimental event where more experienced members went through the paces of making and taking a location photo with less experienced members. One group went 'fishing' at the Wooden Bridge in Boyle and had some fun learning about the process of composing a photograph, ably assisted by not-too-reluctant models (above). The group made the most of the rapidly fading light to discuss issues of ISO and off-camera flash.

A second group were involved in a stake-out at Boyle Railway station, waiting for the arrival of unsuspecting trains to explore the possibilities of slow-shutter speeds and implied movement. Depending on members responses, this could become a regular feature of the club's activities in future. Thanks to everyone that took part.

IPF Distinctions Athlone - April 2011

Photo Shoot Tuesday Evening, 7.30pm 3rd May.

As our usual monthly Photo Shoot date coincides with Easter Sunday and subsequently, the May Bank Holiday Weekend, the committee have opted to reschedule the April shoot to the EVENING of Tuesday 3rd May. Meet at St. Joseph's Resource Centre at 7.30pm.

We appreciate that this may not suit everyone, however, we intend to break into groups and visit a set of local sites to include; Derreen Wood, Boyle Railway Station, the Gaelic Chieftain, Forest Park and others. This will lapse into a low-light shooting situation so members are advised to bring tripods. Each group will be accompanied by at least one advanced member who will go through the process of finding a suitable scene, setting-up and composing the shot and finally, taking the shot. The shoot may also include work with flash.

Club Meeting Tuesday 10th May 8pm

This month's club meeting will include a presentation by Tony Murphy. Tony will discuss the often complex issue of 'LENSES'; focal length, crop factor, maximum aperture, and more. This will be a technical presentation for the purpose of demystifying the jargon associated with lenses and to help members make more informed choices when it comes to investing in 'glass' for your digital SLR.

Annual Weekend Photo Shoot - 13th to 15th May

As stated in an earlier post, this year Boyle Camera Club are going to Inishbofin. 20 members have signed up for a weekend of torture and hard graft as they come to grips with sucking the landscape dry with indulgent photographic endeavour! This is the club's third annual excursion and the event has proven to be a popular and productive engagement for members. The committee are grateful to Peter Boalch and Paraic Brennan for organising the event.

Annual Summer Exhibition

Members are asked to start preparing their images for this year's Annual Exhibition in association with Boyle Arts Festival. Members will submit up to THREE images, one image per member will be selected for the exhibition.

This year the theme is 'open', which means members can submit images on any subject. However, as a guide, we suggest that only one of your three images be a landscape. Generally speaking, in previous years, landscapes have tended to dominate the exhibition so this year we hope to exhibit a more diverse range of work which might include portraits, abstracts, low-light, still-life and other subject matter.

Members are reminded that we will require High-Resolution files of all entries for the purpose of printing, so ensure to keep your edits suitable for printing up to A4 in size.

Competition - "Creativity - Enhancing Our Vision of the Future" - 16th May 2011

A call for monochrome images which will be selected for exhibition in the Helix at DCU this June.

The competition is looking for images which represent the conference theme; "Creativity - Enhancing Our Vision of the Future"

All images accepted will be displayed in the upper foyer of the helix during this international exhibition.

Conns Cameras has donated a first prize of a Cannon Camera and certificates will be awarded at the discretion of the judging panel. Accepted images and details of the photographers will be published in the conference book which will be sold to aid the Japan Relief Fund. Accepted images will also receive a conference sticker to commemorate their acceptance into the exhibition.

Membership turned out in force to welcome Galway landscape photographer, Sean Tomkins, for his presentation at this month's club meeting. Sean presented a selection of his award-winning images of the Irish landscape that stretched from the Dingle Peninsula to the coastline of Mayo. His images reflect the mysterious and often unpredictable nature of Irish light and the seemingly endless patterns and colours that paint drama and emotion into his skyscapes.

Motivation

Joe Kennedy presented this month's Motivation Slideshow. The theme was 'Low-light' and images were judged by the discerning eye of Limerick photographer, Hazel Coffey. Hazel's critique was astute and articulate, the results are as follows;

Sean is an acclaimed, winning, professional landscape photographer from Galway City. He is a self - taught photographer and uses his native Galway as inspiration for his wonderful images. There are many prints of his much loved Connemara and Counties Mayo, Clare and Kerry, and he uses the changing light and dramatic landscapes to create such diverse images. Sean has been a long-time member of the Galway Camera Club and has won many competitions and awards.

March Motivation & Critique - Low-Light, presented by Joe Kennedy. This month's Motivation will be judged by Photographer, Hazel Coffey. Hazel is an exceptional photographer and member of Limerick Camera Club. She has a sensitive eye for nature and the Irish landscape. A regular visitor to the Flickr sites of many Boyle Camera Club members, Hazel has earned our respect for her astute and articulate praise and criticism of our work.

5 Go Wild in Dublin

This weekend, some club members met informally in Dublin to seek out photographic treasure. During daylight hours, the group explored the possibilities presented on the city streets and were not deterred by the severe downpours that happened to hit Dublin that day. Later, they photographed about the area of the Samual Beckett Bridge and Grand Canal Theatre where the lighting and exposure challenges are very different to those here in Boyle. Sunday morning included a visit to the Smithfield Horse Fair before heading home. If any members have engaged in any similar ventures, let us know and we'll be happy to publish them here.

Professional Photographer, John Reynolds delivered an insightful and very informative presentation on Low-light photography at this month's club meeting. John shared his extensive experience as a wedding photographer and how he deals with the issue of low-light on a daily basis. He illustrated the advantages and disadvantages of working with ambient and artificial light sources. Of particular interest is his work with off camera flash. Appropriate in the context of John's presentation, the Motivation for April will be Low-light Photography.

Joe Kennedy presented the submissions for the Self-Portrait Motivation which was judged by John Reynolds. I thought the response was very imaginative with many members presenting an emerging personal style. The results from each category is as follows;

Milestones

Conor Dowling gave a very informing extended presentation on the work of Hungarian photographer, Brassaï (1899 – 1984). Appropriate in the context of the low-light theme at this meeting, Conor drew attention to Brassaï’s night scenes of Paris from the 1930s and the documentary style of this often understated and influential photographer. We hope that this will be the first of a series of talks by Conor to look at some of histories most inspiring and influential photographers.

Summer Weekend Photo Shoot - Inishbofin

Peter Boalch has been busy setting up our annual Summer Weekend Photo Shoot which will take place from Friday 13th to 15th May. This year Boyle Camera Club will be heading to the island of Inishbofin. Access to the island is via ferry with mainland departure times for Friday at 11.00am, 2.00pm and 7.30pm. Cost of ferry is €17.00 return. Members should attempt to take the afternoon ferry to make the most of the visit. Accommodation will be at The Dolphin Hotel, cost for TWO nights B&B plus ONE Evening Meal is €119.00. Members intending to take part should give their name to the club secretary or email info@boylecameraclub.com. For insurance purposes, only fully registered members can take part in the photo shoot.

Photo Shoot – Strokestown House

This month’s club photo shoot will take place on Sunday 27th March to Strokestown House. There will be plenty of opportunity to explore the possibilities of Low-Light photography so make sure to bring your tripod! Meet on The Crescent, Boyle at 9am for carpool.

Distinctions

There will be 10 club members going forward for the IPF Licentiateship distinction this Autumn. Conor Dowling is overseeing this aspect of club activity and has made arrangements to meet with the group from 7 – 8pm, before each monthly club meeting.

The group had their first meeting on 8th March. Conor went through the IPF distinction requirements and presented each member with a copy of the IPF distinction guidelines. In the coming weeks, participating members will decide on a Theme for their panel of images and email TWO potential thematic images to Conor. Conor has offered to print the images which will subsequently inform a discussion at the next group meeting.

Landscape Photography Workshop in Cork – March 2011

Photographers Chris O’Dell and Phil Pound present the first in the Spring series of their DIGITAL LANDSCAPE PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOPS, scheduled for early March at the stunningly beautiful Inish Beg Island Estate near Baltimore in West Cork from March 4th to 6th, 2011.

There will be many opportunities for practical LANDSCAPE photography at selected venues around West Cork. Club Meeting - Tuesday 8th of February

Standing room only at this month’s club meeting. The scheduled agenda was presented as planned.

Tony Murphy conducted a Photoshop make-over on a photo of the Plassey Boat taken by Michael Candon during the Inis Oirr trip last June. Non-destructive editing was demonstrated which addressed aspects of using Adjustment Layers, Layer Blending Modes and High Pass Sharpening.

Tony is teaching a course on Digital Darkroom Techniques which will start on Wednesday 23rd February at Roscommon Learning Links in Boyle.

Motivation

This month’s Motivation was judged by photographer, Christine Burns from Celbridge Camera Club. Christine’s detailed and extensive commentary was presented by Joe Kennedy.

Next month’s Motivation theme is; Self-Portraiture. Members will come to terms with using their camera’s self-timer or remote shutter release. As ever, a creative and inventive approach to the theme is encouraged.

Group Sessions

The Beginners (led by Paraic Brennan) and Intermediate (led by Joe Kennedy and John Reynolds) groups, discussed manual and semi-automatic camera settings as an alternative to depending on full-auto. This was the first session that will go some way to addressing individual members technical needs as outlined at our January meeting. The sessions are designed to give members a voice, opportunity to learn and to contribute at meetings. In time, sessions will develop to cover other photography issues.

The Advanced group discussed the work of American photographer, Walker Evans who will inform this month’s ‘Advanced Challenge’. Advanced members are encouraged to give some thought to this photographers work in the coming weeks and produce a single photo inspired by Evans’ extensive and varied output. Advanced members will review the submissions at next month’s meeting. Sean O’Dowd will present next month’s challenge.

Conor Dowling is planning to prepare interested members for IPF Distinctions this year. He hopes to conduct a meeting with this group shortly and outline the requirements set down by the IPF for the award.

Photo Shoot - Cavan-Leitrim Railway, Dromod.

Boyle Camera Club would like to extend our gratitude to Pat Coen & Michael Kennedy and the Volunteers at The Cavan-Leitrim Railway Museum in Dromod for the warm, friendly and excellent reception we received there during today's photo shoot. The staff pulled out all the stops (literally!) as they presented the extensive range of locomotive antiques they have collected over the years. Members had free-reign on this photographic escapade with more subject matter for photography to feast your eyes on than you could shake a stick at!

This was our first shoot of the year and was very well attended. Photo Shoots are a monthly club event and provide great opportunities to visit and appreciate some of the fine locations we have about Boyle. Photo Shoots also give members the chance to learn about taking pictures in an informal setting and meet like-minded enthusiasts with a passion for photography.

Calendar of Events 2011 - Part 1.

The Calendar of Events for the first part of 2011 is now available to members HERE. We hope to include presentations on photographic issues delivered by invited experts so as to broaden members understanding of the craft of photography today. Suggestions are welcomed from members for future presentations and guest speakers.

A Photographers Vest is a very useful piece of kit to have on a photo shoot. Boyle Camera Club currently have these available to members. The vest is light and durable with plenty of pockets to carry that extra lens, filters and other accessories. It also has 'Boyle Camera Club' embroidered over the breast pocket. Vests cost €35.00, are available in all sizes and come in khaki and navy.

NIPA Triptych competition 2011

IPF Distinctions Workshop in Kilkenny

The next round of IPF Distinctions is scheduled to take place in Athlone in April 2011.

In advance of this Kilkenny Photographic Society are hosting a Distinctions Workshop at the St. Patrick's Centre in Kilkenny on Saturday 12th February 2011 from 10.00 am to 3.00 pm.

Mark Sedgewick will be there to provide useful information and to give advice to anyone intending to apply for a distinction this year - albeit an L, an A or an F! If you would like to receive advice, it is recommended that you bring a selection of photographs you have taken which you think may form the basis of your distinction panel.

In addition, it will also provide an opportunity to meet other people and to share ideas etc.

The timetable will run as follows:

11.00am: Morning Session
12.30pm: Lunch break
1.00pm: Afternoon Session
3.00pm: Close

There will be a minimal cover charge of E5 on the door.

Guy Gowan Workshops in Sligo

I had the great pleasure to attend a number of Guy Gowan Workshops over the years in Dublin so I was delighted to hear, he is now setting up a studio in Sligo and will be conducting workshops there in the coming weeks.

Gowan is a master in the area of post-production editing, workflow and printing and is a regular contributor to Professional Photographer Magazine. His workshops are not for the digital photography novice. This post will probably have some appeal to more advanced or Intermediate members with a good knowledge of photography and Photoshop. If you want to raise your photographic game or take your editing skills to a new level, then this is for you.

Danone Actimel 'Winter - Full of Life' Photo Competition

The Danone Actimel Winter Full of Life Photo Competition has been launched and this national photography challenge has a top prize of €10,000 for the photograph that best captures Ireland’s Full of Life Winter Moment.

Danone Actimel is encouraging all photographers to get out there and enjoy winter - take a picture of your family or friends getting the most out of winter, post it on the Actimel Full of Life website and the winning photograph will receive a top prize of €10,000.

The Actimel website has tips on how to get support for your pictures (as well as tips for keeping healthy in winter). The finalists for the Danone Actimel Winter Full of Life Photo Competition will be selected by the public through an on-line vote, before they go towards the final round of judging. As well as National winners, the photo that receives the most votes in each county will get a Canon Ixus digital camera.

Our first meeting of the year was very well attended, with many new faces ... and familiar ones too. The full agenda was presented as planned, ably coordinated by the club's new Chair, Kit O'Connor.

The club have adopted a change to the regular format of meetings. Henceforth, for a brief period during meetings, members will splinter into Beginners - Intermediate - Advanced Groups. On this occasion, groups identified issues they would like to see addressed during these sessions. These issues are presented on the respective group Pages (see the page tabs above) and items of interest and points of information will be added in this space regularly.

The committee are currently working on a Calendar of Events for the year ahead and hope to present it at the February meeting.

January Photo Shoot

A photo shoot is planned for Sunday 30th January. Meet at 9.00a.m. on The Crescent, Boyle to car-pool for a trip to Dromod and the Cavan-Leitrim Railway Museum. The entrance fee is €5.00.

From next month, the motivation images will be judged by an invited photographer and a points system adopted. Prizes will be awarded in each category at the AGM. There will be a critique of a selection of images during the meeting.

Share Ireland Photography Event - Submission before 21st January

Sligo VEC is calling on all photographers nationwide to join in their celebration of Wikipedia’s tenth birthday.

To recognise the event they are running an event called ‘Share Ireland’. They are asking you to send your photographs from around the country. The aim is to create a library of user-generated images that will be freely available online through Wikimedia Commons – an archive built by community for community. This resource is currently very short on Irish content.

Prizes for participation in events will include digital hampers and mini video recorders, so get those pictures in for a chance to win. You can find out more about Wikimedia Commons. Please bear in mind that images of a particularly personal nature or of copyrighted items cannot be accepted (for example, logos). Photographs of minors must include consent of a parent or guardian.

If you are interested in adding your images to the archives please forward pictures to wikiwander@gmail.com by 5pm on Friday 21 st January 2011. Image title, your name, address and telephone number must also be included.

Boyle Camera Club will kick off the New Year with our first Club Meeting next Tuesday, 11th January at 8pm in St. Joseph's Resource Centre. The club will be adopting a revised structure to meetings which will afford members the opportunity to actively engage with photographic issues relevant to their level of proficiency. Members and New Members are reminded that the annual club subscription fee is now due and can be paid at the meeting. The fee structure has been revised. Full Membership is now €45 and students, unwaged and OAP's €15.

There will be a club Photo Shoot on Sunday, 30th January. We will visit the Railway Station at Dromod in Co. Leitrim. I visited this place a few months ago and it is a treasure-trove of antique auto-locomotion with everything from old trains to tanks and airplanes. Full of colour and something for everyone. More details disclosed at the meeting.

Members are asked to make recommendations for future club photo shoots and we hope to have a full diary of shoots and events prepared for our February meeting.

FIAP Club World Cup 2010

Boyle Camera Club would like to extend their congratulations to Dundalk and Celbridge Camera Clubs on their unprecedented achievements at this year's FIAP Club World Cup. Not only was it the first time that Camera Clubs from Ireland have featured in the top 10, but to be awarded 1st and 3rd place, is worthy of great celebration.

The World Cup, winning PANEL submitted by Dundalk Photographic Society is a stunning collection of photographs and a credit to club members. Equally impressive is the PANEL from Celbridge Camera Club.

As a club still in it's infancy, BCC can take inspiration from the photographic excellence presented by Dundalk and Celbridge. Although we may not yet be at this level, we acknowledge the achievement and send our warmest wishes to you both for the New Year.

Tuesday night's AGM was very well attended. The main business of the meeting involved the presentation of Officers Reports and the election of a new committee.

Stepping down this year are; Chairperson, Louise Cole and Secretary, Dermot Devine. Louise, in her capacity as Chair, has been very active and highly regarded during her term. A former Club Secretary, she has been a tireless promoter of the club and will be missed for her contributions at committee level. Dermot, always fastidious in his duties as Secretary, his calm and reserved assertiveness and wit, will also be missed.

The election of the incoming committee was suitably abrupt. Elected Officers are as follows; Chairperson - Kit O'Connor, Secretary - Paraic Brennan, Motivation - Joe Kennedy, Photoshoots - Peter Boalch. New Offices for 2011 will be; Andrew Rimmer (Treasurer) and Debbie Little, Margaret Dolan & Tony Murphy.

After the presentation of this months Motivation (Film Titles) and critique, led by Joe Kennedy, members retired to enjoy an informal social gathering which included food and wine to toast the Christmas Season and look forward to the year ahead.

Our exhibition opened on Friday night to a good crowd. There have been some very flattering comments and a number of sales already. There is still time to view the pictures - we are open from 11am until 6pm today, Sunday, so do call in if you are able!

Exhibition Opens Tonight!

Join us tonight, Friday December 10th, at the opening of our Winter Exhibition of framed photographs. We start at 7.30pm in the Chambers Restaurant building, Bridge Street, Boyle (opposite the Royal Hotel), and we will be open from 10am until 6pm on Saturday (11th) and from 11am until 6pm on Sunday (12th). Pictures will be for sale and we will have local author and storyteller Barry Feely joining us for the launch tonight, signing copies of his new book.

Preparations for our Photographic Exhibition this coming weekend are well underway, hindered only a little by the wintry weather conditions!

We look forward to welcoming everyone to our opening evening on Friday, December 10th at 7.30pm, and we are delighted that local author and storyteller Barry Feely will be joining us then and will be signing copies of his new book. The Exhibition takes place in the former Chambers Restaurant in Bridge Street, Boyle, for the weekend.

Don't forget that the Motivation entries are due tomorrow (December 7th); the subject is 'A Film Title', and our AGM and Christmas Social will be held next week at 8pm on Tuesday, December 14th, in St Joseph's Resource Centre, Boyle.

There is still time to nominate someone for the committee, and we are pleased to say that there are already a few willing volunteers who have come forward.

Exhibition
Make a note in your diary to come and see our Winter Exhibition from December 10th to 12th, in the Chambers Restaurant Building, Bridge Street Boyle, (opposite the Royal Hotel).
You are invited to join us for the launch on the Friday evening (December 10th) at 7.30pm, when we hope there will be a good turn out to join us in a toast to local photography!
All of the pictures will be for sale - we'll publish more details here nearer the date (participants will receive further information via e-mail).
AGM
Our next monthly meeting, which is on Tuesday, December 14th, is also our AGM. We will publish the agenda here before then, but now is a good time to be considering who should join the committee (we already have a few volunteers!). If you would like to nominate someone, please make sure they are in agreement first! After the AGM we will be having our Christmas Social...
Motivation
We'll be showing the entries for our motivation after the AGM. The topic is "a film title" - tricky, eh? Do you think of the title first and then try to picture it, or do you get the image first and then try to find a film title that fits? Its a bit of fun - we're looking for wit and originality as well as excellent photographic skill! The deadline is Tuesday, December 7th.
IPF National Print and Projected Image Competition
The Mid Western Regional round of this competition is hosted by Mullingar Camera Club. Entries will be accepted at the Arts Centre in Mullingar from 7pm on Wednesday December 1st. Successful images will go on to the national competition in Athlone in February. Check out www.irishphoto.ie for more info.

Leitrim photographer Eunan Sweeney has an exhibition of images he took in India, taking place in the Dock, Carrick on Shannon. It opens on November 27th at 4pm.

Competition

Congratulations to the winners of the Lough Allen Photo Competition: Amy Clarke took first place, with Norman Little second, Linda Duffy third and Susan Duffy fourth. Highly commended were Margaret Dolan, Andy Rimmer and Tommy Earley. View the winning photos HERE. The prizes were presented by David Farrell and the Club expresses its gratitude to the Farrell family for their hard work in running the competition.

Club Business

Our November meeting included mention of the sad passing of one of our past members, Betty Meyler, who died the day of the competition after a long illness.

We also heard from picture framing expert Marion Fink-Thews, who showed us the different effects of coloured mounts and frames.

Tony Murphy gave a detailed critique of the Motivation entries, which were on the theme of 'Natural Frames'. Read the critique HERE.

Our next Motivation will be to picture a film title. We expect wit and ingenuity as well as fine camera work!

The portable studio lights are still available for any member to borrow. Call in to The Greenway Emporium in Market Yard, Boyle, to pick them up.

Forthcoming Exhibition

Next up for the Club is an exhibition/sale of work on December 10th-12th, when members have the opportunity to sell some of their photographs directly to the public. There is no limit of the subject or size, but the pictures must be in black frames with white or cream mounts. You will be able to set your own price, but the Club will take a 10 per cent commission on sales. Please let Louise know (on the usual number you receive texts from!) if you are interested in being part of the exhibition, by the end of this week (November 12th). If we haven't heard from you by then, we will assume you don't want to be included! The exhibition will be in the former Chambers Restaurant, opposite the Royal Hotel in Bridge Street, Boyle. Pictures will need to be ready to hang the week beginning December 6th, so hurry!
