10th April 2011I came across this link to a series of programmes based on the work of photographer, Charlie Waite, which I thought might interest members. There are 4 x 10 minute installments (Part 1,2,3, & 4) that you might be interested in from the perspective of Landscape Photogaphy. Pay particular attention to Part 3# on using filters and the 'string tripod' in Part 4# - classic! Follow this link: Seeing Scotland

The contemporary darkroom is the computer and Photoshop, the chemicals. Too often today's photographers are ridiculed and condemned for 'cheating' when they use image editing software to process and sometimes enhance their photos. Lest we forget, image manipulation has been around for some time! Ansel Adams is one of the most respected photographers of the 20th century, listen to this interview and take note of his attitude to making pictures. In short, if the great man were about today, he would love Photoshop!

Some members of the club got together over the weekend for an informal strobist photo shoot in the foothills of the Curlews. The purpose of the shoot was to explore the possibilities of using artificial light sources during daylight for dramatic effect. It was a very enjoyable and productive couple of hours and promises to be repeated again in the near future. Small photo shoot groups provide a great opportunity to learn from each other and discover new ways of making images. Our grateful thanks to model Eadin for her patience.

Advanced Group Session
This month’s ‘Advanced Challenge’ will focus on American photographer, Walker Evans (1903 – 1975). Although Evan had a long and varied career in photography, he is best known for his images of the Great Depression shot in the 1930s in the Southern United States. He was one of many photographers hired by the Farm Security Administration to record the life of the displaced farming community who were living in sever poverty caused by the national economic climate and regular droughts. With his large-format, 8 x 10 inch camera and tripod, Evans captured vivid and memorable images of the people and their way of life. His photos are not sentimental, he has an honest, documentary style, subjects are in sharp focus and hard light chisels details in a manner that accentuates realism.
Evans worked with the writer James Agee on a book called ‘Let Us Now Praise Famous Men’(published in 1941). It is a powerful and moving testament to the struggle and resilience of three sharecropper families living in Alabama in 1936. His famous portrait of ‘Allie Mae Burroughs’ (above) dates from this period.
In 1938 The Museum of Modern Art in New York presented an exhibition titled ‘Walker Evans: American Photographs’. It was the first exhibition in the history of the museum devoted to the work of a single photographer.
Evans work also has a lot in common with John Steinbeck’s Pulitzer Prize winning novel (and later film directed by John Ford), ‘The Grapes of Wrath’ (published in 1939). In fact, Steinbeck’s book may well have been influenced by Evans’ photographs from this period.
Members are asked to examine an aspect of Evans’ work that appeals to them, and use this to inform the making of a photo that reflects his distinctive style. Participating members can print their photo and bring it to the March meeting or email it to tony@tonymurphy.ie (file size 1024 pixels). We will review the photos briefly during the next Advanced group session.
Best of luck.

At this month's club meeting, advanced members identified a number of areas they wished to engage with over the course of the year. These are the main areas that were discussed;
- Members wishing to go forward for IPF Distinctions will form a group led by Conor Dowling and meet once a month to review on-going progress in putting together panels of images. This is also open to other club members wishing to pursue their LIPF.
- The advanced group will start a regular Photographic Challenge that will involve reviewing the work of an historical photographer and using his/her work to inform and influence a photographic project. This is designed to encourage advanced members develop their awareness and appreciation of photography from an historical and aesthetic perspective. Tony Murphy will present a photographer of his choice at the February club meeting. Subsequently, other members will take turns to present the challenge to the group. It was felt that club members as a whole would benefit from regular discussions/presentations on the history and appreciation of photography.
- It was also suggested that the group should Share Resources, communicate items of interest discovered ... books, You Tube video's and tutorials, inspirational photographers, etc.
- Advanced members felt that they (and club members generally) would benefit from presentations and/or workshops concerning basic (and more advanced) Image Editing Techniques.http://www.guygowan.com/anne@guygowan.com
