"On Saturday the 16th April I travelled down to the RTC in Athlone for the bi-annual IPF’s Distinctions/National Shields. It was well attended with a large gathering from all over Ireland.
There were over fifty entries for the Licentiate Distinction. As a number of members from Boyle Camera Club are at the early stages of building a panel for the Licentiate, I was interested to see the standard of entries. Attending these distinctions was very exciting even though I did not have an entry myself, but just looking at other photographers work renewed my interest in completing a panel for the next round. There were 11 judge’s, 10 of whom had reached the excellence of the Fellowship distinction. These photographers examined each of the fifty odd panels and made their assessments. A number did not make the award, mainly for the following reasons;
  1. Sharpness - pictures where not crisp.
  2. Contrast - a number of pictures had areas that where ‘blown out’ to much white or black and too little detail.
  3. Composition - not enough thought had gone into creating the image, picture was too ‘ordinary’.
A very interesting day, the standard was very high but achievable. I look forward to the members of BCC entering their work at the next IPF meeting which will be held sometime in November (to be decided). Keep up the good work!!"

There will be 10 club members going forward for the IPF Licentiateship distinction this Autumn. Conor Dowling is overseeing this aspect of club activity and has made arrangements to meet with the group from 7 – 8pm, before each monthly club meeting.
The group had their first meeting on 8th March. Conor went through the IPF distinction requirements and presented each member with a copy of the IPF distinction guidelines. In the coming weeks, participating members will decide on a Theme for their panel of images and email TWO potential thematic images to Conor. Conor has offered to print the images which will subsequently inform a discussion at the next group meeting.
