Meeting 19th January 2010

Friday, January 15, 2010
We're on for Tuesday next!
Well, the thaw is here at last (hopefully) and so we're all set for our meeting on Tuesday next (19th), postponed from our usual second-Tuesday in the month. Since many of our members travel some distance to get to our meetings, it made sense to postpone our get-together because of the appalling driving conditions last week.
Our January meeting will include
* news of our programme of meetings, photo-shoots and motivations for the first half of the year;
* another chance to see the slideshow on the Aran Islands, which is our destination for a weekend away in June;
* a slideshow on the Christmas motivation (the deadline for our quarterly competition, Wintertime, is on January 31st);
* membership renewal – forms will be available on the night; we have not changed our subscription – it is €50 a year for full membership or €30 for juniors, students and the unwaged;
* Tony Murphy will give one of his short presentations on photographic appreciation, this time featuring one of the iconic photographs of the last decade.
As always, the meeting starts at 8pm in the Lough Key Room of the Royal Hotel, Bridge Street, Boyle. New members are welcome – all you need is a keen interest in digital photography, access to the internet and a mobile phone to receive text messages.
Beginners may like to know that there are still a few places left on the Digital Photography evening course at the HEC in Boyle (tutored by Tony Murphy). Thursday evenings, starting on January 21st. Information will be available on Tuesday evening, or if you want to get ahead of the possé, contact Siobhan Gallagher on 071 9664510.

Monthly meeting postponed due to the weather!
So now, we will meet (weather permitting), at 8pm on Tuesday, January 19th, as always in the Lough Key Room of the Royal Hotel, Bridge Street, Boyle.
Bring your cheque book, as this will be your opportunity to pay your subscription for the coming year!
Something new to look forward to will be laminated membership cards and a schedule of forthcoming trips, meetings and motivations. There will, of course, be a slide show from our recent competition, 'Wintertime', and a repeat of the information about our weekend away to the Aran Islands in June.
If the weather is still wreaking havoc on us this time next week, we may have to reconsider the 19th, but members will be kept informed by text.
Happy New Year, everyone!

Season's Greetings Everyone!
Don't forget that our monthly motivation for members is for 'Christmas' . That can be anything you like, so long as it has a Christmas theme! The deadline for submissions is January 1st 2010. As always, you can submit up to two pictures which will then be included in a slideshow at our next meeting, Tuesday January 12th in the Royal Hotel, Boyle. Please make sure you format your pictures properly and include your name and the name of the photograph in the file name.
Our quarterly competition is 'Wintertime' and the deadline for that is January 31st 2010. For the competition you can again submit two images, but this time you must also include the category you are in (beginner, intermediate or advanced) in the file name, alongside your name and the title of the picture. Good Luck!

Eagles Flying - Photoshoot - 15th November 2009
So how just how did we manage to fix such good weather for our photo-shoot to 'Eagles Flying', the Irish Raptor Research Centre in Ballymote, County Sligo on Sunday? After our last grey, rainy day out to Drumcliffe, we were hoping for some better weather and against the odds, we headed off in the sunshine to photograph a flying display of eagles, owls and other birds of prey. Although closed for the winter, the Centre opened especially for the 31 members who came out.
The Centre is home to 350 animals and birds from 75 different species including a Harris Hawk that was partial to Peter's hat and a saddleback pig that liked the look of Tony! We enjoyed a lively commentary from Lothar Muschketat, assisted by his wife Regina, son Alex, and helper Stephen, and watched eagles, owls, hawks and vultures swoop and dive overhead for rewards of food.
The Centre is a sanctuary for injured and endangered animals and birds – and we heard how there has been an upsurge of abandoned owls after doting parents copied the Harry Potter books and bought their children pet owls, but then couldn't care for them. The Centre is also temporary home to some gannets and a swan who will fly back into the wild when they are fit enough.
The fine weather meant we were lucky to have an outdoor flying display - the Centre now offers winter-time indoor displays in a purpose-built building on the site. If you missed the shoot, Eagles Flying is well worth a visit – a beautiful setting, lots of birds and animals to view and pet (guinea pigs, rabbits, donkeys and others), and the live show is very entertaining. Visitors can see indoor birds of prey flying displays from December 1st until Christmas Eve, at 6pm daily.

Our next photo-shoot is on Sunday, November 15th, when Peter Boalch leads a trip to Ballymote in County Sligo to enjoy a flying display of birds of prey at the 'Eagles Flying' centre. This trip will cost €10 each for admission. Some members will already have been to the centre earlier this year, when heavy snow left some of us unable to travel, so a return trip was arranged. Meet in the car park in the Crescent, Boyle, for car pooling at 9.30am, or meet at 'Eagles Flying' at 10.15am for a 10.30am start. As always, for insurance reasons, this will be a members-only event.

Club Meeting 8th July 2009
Taking advantage of a very fine evening, this month's meeting deviated slightly from the usual format and consisted of an informal photo shoot about Boyle. Members met at the earlier time of 7.30pm on the Crescent and broke into a number of groups. The promise of a light-filled evening was short lived however as the unexpected darkening clouds played havoc with ISO, Aperture and Shutter Speed settings and rickety tripods! However, this did not take away from an event that was as much about getting out and talking about light and photography as much as it was about attempting to capture it. Members regrouped at the Moving stairs to discuss their exploits over a sociable drink and contemplate the forth coming exhibition at the end of the month.

Photo Shoot - Sunday 26th April
There was a great turn out for our April Photo Shoot. 29 members met on The Crescent and proceeded to Derreen Wood, just 4 miles from Boyle. The famous bluebells attract visitors from far and wide, and are almost at their peak, however today's light was less than perfect. This did not stop members getting down and dirty to make the most of this beautiful Springtime spectacle.
The club proceeded towards Knockvicar and Clarendon Lock. Here, the many boats that navigate the Shannon, pass through the lock between Boyle and Carrick for a €1.50 toll.
A special invitation was extended to club members to visit the beautifully restored Deerpark House, home of club members Dan and Margaret. Deerpark was once the hunting lodge of the Rockingham Estate and was famous for hosting the biggest and finest game and fowl hunts in Ireland. Dan and Margaret graciously entertained this shooting party and kept the tradition alive with a feast fit for 'Kings' and photographers alike. The club would like to extent our sincere gratitude to Dan and Margaret for their generous hospitality.
The photo shot ended with a visit to Ardcarne Garden Centre. Here, in this macro photographers 'Heaven', the rain nor wet lenses did not hinder the keenest bunch of photographers in the county. Our thanks to Ronan O'Conghaile and his staff for allowing members photograph his colourful displays of native and exotic flowers, trees and shrubs.
Club Photo Shoots happen once a month, throughout the year - yes, even during the Summer! They are as much about making friends, having fun and getting to visit some of the best and most beautiful locations our area has to offer, as much as they are about taking photos, discussing and learning about photography techniques and sharing knowledge. Boyle Camera Club is open to anyone with an interest in photography. Whether you own a digital compact or SLR camera, we can help you explore and exploit the technology to capture better photographs in a fun and friendly environment.
Our next Club Meeting will take place in the Moving Stairs, Boyle at 8pm, Wednesday 13th May. An agenda for the meeting will be posted shortly.
Members who took part in this month's photo shoot are asked to send in some of their photos for inclusion in a slide show at our next meeting. Submissions to; info@boylecameraclub.com Make sure your photos have your Name and Title as the 'file name'.
Photos will be available to view HERE.
