Clare Island Photo Shoot - The Best Yet!!

BCC Clare Island May 2012
Some of the participating members from Boyle Camera Club - Clare Island May 2012.

Last weekend, Boyle Camera Club members went on their now annual weekend outing to an island off the Irish coast. This year the destination was Clare Island, in Clew Bay, Co. Mayo.
We thought our 2010 trip to Inis Oirr couldn’t be beaten but how wrong we were. We soaked up the beautiful summer sunshine on walks and cycle-trips around the island, took plenty of photographs and enjoyed the hospitality and the ‘craic’ in the evening. Thanks to our hostess Helen O’Grady and her husband Alan who provided such wonderful food and accommodation.

Members are reminded to please send their photos from the weekend to info@boylecameraclub.com for inclusion in a slideshow for the June club meeting.

Also, don't forget this months motivation 'A Moment Captured', submissions by Friday 8th June.

Club Meeting 8th May 2012

RGB Motivation Winners - May 2012

Our Chairman, Christopher O'Connor, opened the meeting. He mentioned that the club was currently taking bookings for a printing workshop to be held on Saturday the 19th of May. The estimated cost would be €20 and the workshop would cover all aspects of printing including monitor calibration. Currently there are 9 members booked on the workshop.
Christopher also mentioned that the cost of accommodation for the Clare Island trip is finalised and outlined in an earlier post HERE. Twenty members will be attending the event.

Presentation
Christopher O'Connor introduced our special guest for the night, Sean Reidy. Sean is a Lecturer in the University of Limerick and a keen Landscape photographer in his spare time. Sean started off with a slideshow of his work. He told how he started in photography with film in the 1980’s and began printing in Black and White, when he developed his passion for Landscape Photography. He was impressed by the work of Fay Goodwin which presented the possibilities of using photography as an art form. He photographed the Val d’Orchia in Tuscany and showed some stunning shots from the trip. Sean also showed work from some of his visits to the United States. Sean then showed a selection of Irish landscapes from areas that are readily accessible from his home near Limerick, the Kerry Coast, Curragh Chase, Milltown Malbay, Fanore, and the Loop Head Peninsula. He finished a most accomplished selection of images with another set of stunning sports shots. These shots of Swimming, Boxing and Basketball were taken in the Sports facilities in the University of Limerick. Our sincere gratitude to Sean for an excellent and very informative presentation.

Colour Management and Print Workshop with Ciarán Rooney

Ciaran Rooney Workshop - 19th May 2012
Saturday 19th May. Ciaran Rooney from Filmbank Colour Management delivered a workshop to members in St. Joseph’s Resource Centre, Boyle on the intricacies of colour space, profiling, colour management and printing. As the club moves towards encouraging members to be more active with regard to printing their images, it is appropriate that the relevant issues be addressed by experts in this field. Ciaran’s business is concerned with high-end fine art printing and we were delighted that he was able to make the trip from his studio in Dublin to share his knowledge of this often misunderstood and complex craft.

Photo Shoot - Strandhill, 29th April

DSC_5707 photo group no2 resize.jpg
Thirteen club members attended this month's photo shoot on Sunday 29th April. We took advantage of a beautiful sunny but bracing morning at Knocknarea and later in Strandhill, Sligo. Landscapes, seascapes, and people shots was the 'bill-o-fare'. The usual suspects focused on long exposures. See a selection of shots from the photoshoot on the club Flickr site later. Due to the unseasonal cold wind we made our way home early with a stop in Strandhill for a chat and a welcome cup of tea.

Notice; All members entering photos for this month's motivation ‘RGB or Red Green and Blue’ should note that the submission date has been changed due to next weeks Bank Holiday. Submissions should be emailed to info@boylecameraclub.com by midnight on Thursday May 3rd.

Ireland takes top prize in FIAP Monochrome Biennial

Ireland took the overall prize in the FIAP (International Federation of Photographic Art) Monochrome Biennial, which took place in Spain earlier this month, staving off stiff competition from rival countries such as England and Spain.

Ireland has punched above its weight in international competitions hosted by FIAP to date but this is the first time that Ireland has scooped the overall prize in a FIAP event.
Irish camera clubs and societies have ranked highly in other FIAP events, such as the 2011 FIAP World Cup, where Dundalk Photographic Society took second place and Celbridge Camera Club ranked in the top 10 grouping.

Building on that success, Irish photographers raised the bar even further to take the top prize at the 31st FIAP black and white biennial when the results were announced on March 14th.
There was also cause for celebration for two of the participating Irish photographers who each took a FIAP bronze medal for their images: Judy Boyle from Drogheda Camera Club for ‘Holy cow’ and Ciaran DeBhal from Dundalk Photographic Society for ‘Big door, small people’.

Photo Shoot - Knockvicker 25th March 2012

Knockvicar-Photoshoot 25th March 2012

The Club's monthly photo shoot was held at Clarendon Lock, Knockvicar on Sunday 25th March. It must have been the clocks going forward that prevented a full attendance but those that made it enjoyed beautiful weather for photography! The location was chosen to suit the Club's Motivation topic for March - 'water'. Long exposure filters were used to maximise the effect of the water running over the weir. Later in the morning graduated filters were used to deal with the strengthening sun. There were also plenty of opportunities for capturing passing boats and the first flowers of Spring. We look forward to many more days like this.
