Well done Matthew - AIPF distinction

Congratulations to club member Matthew Gammon who was awarded his Associateship at the recent IPF Meeting in Carlow. Matthew is the first member to gain the AIPF within the club. His panel was based on his recent successful solo exhibition 'Beauty in the Commonplace'. The successful panel and panel statement can be seen below. Well done Matthew!

Panel Statement:

This panel is a selection of works from my recent exhibition, Beauty in the Commonplace. The works in the exhibition represent my own unique interpretation of structure, line and form in both the natural and man-made landscapes that surround our everyday life. These particular fifteen works focus on man-made structures. Through the abstraction of what I believe to be the essential elements in what I see around me, I have attempted to capture and interpret the innate beauty to be found in what can become, through habit, the commonplace and everyday.

All the works are hand printed by myself using the photo intaglio printmaking process which allows me to create prints that best express my artistic vision. Through the use of modern technology in the form of both digital photography and photopolymer plates, I am able to retain the intimate links between photography and printmaking, whilst pushing the boundaries of what can be created in this modern reincarnation of the photogravure process.

Mick Nolan R.I.P.

Mick Nolan with his photograph which was part of the winning IPF National Shield panel in 2013 (Photo:G Percy)

It is with deep regret and profound sadness that we learned of the passing of our dear friend and  fellow member, Mick Nolan, after a brave battle with illness. Mick will be remembered in Boyle Camera Club, for being a great character, a talented photographer and an integral member of the club. He had a brilliant sense of humour, with his quick wit and funny comments, which provided great entertainment at club meetings and photoshoots. He was also a very committed club member, supporting the club in all of its activities and representing the club with distinction at various competitions and exhibitions. In 2013, he deservedly received the honour of 'Advanced Photographer of the Year' In Boyle Camera Club.

Mick Nolan awarded Advanced Photographer of the Year in 2013

As well as being an invaluable club member, Mick was also a fine photographer with a great eye for a photo. His photography covered many genres, including landscape, portrait, still life, macro, nature, and documentary. Mick's personality shone right throughout his work. He had the ability to engage people, with his friendly manner, to produce wonderful portraits. He also had a great gift of capturing humour in his photographs, whether it be a with people, animals, or a well observed funny situation. In 2013, Mick photography was included in the Boyle Camera Club entry which won the 2013 Irish Photographic Federation (IPF) National Shield at its first attempt. This was a significant honour for the club and a great testament to Mick's skill as a photographer. His talent was further recognised, in May 2014, when Mick was awarded the distinction of Licentiate with the Irish Photographic Federation (LIPF). His winning panel of photographs is shown below.

Mick Nolan LIPF - Mick's panel of photos for which he was awarded the distinction of Licentiate with the Irish Photographic Federation (IPF).

Above all Mick was a great friend to everyone at the club. He was always generous with his words of encouragement and support for other member's work, whether it was in person or a witty comment on Flickr. His passing is a huge loss to Boyle Camera Club. We extend our deepest sympathies to his wife Chris, family and friends on this very sad occasion.
May he rest in Peace.

Funeral Arrangements can be viewed here.
If members wish to comment or share any thoughts they can do so on the forum here.
We would also encourage you to enjoy Mick's photography here.

January Meeting - Skills Sessions

Firstly, Happy New Year to all! As discussed at the last meeting the January meeting is to focus on a learning section. We have two sessions lined up.

Edit Challenge
Des is to take those interested in lightroom editing, note you do not need to be a lightroom user to part take as techniques used will be applicable across all editing software. Also this is aimed at already competent users and is NOT a entry level session. Raw file is available for download here.

Please submit edited versions of the files here by Midnight the 6th January

Des will use these as part of the discussion at the next meeting. This is a great opportunity to focus on editing and the various images which can be created from the same base file.

Basic Skills Session
John Walshe will take a second group. From previous discussions there is a interest in learning more about basic camera skills and basic editing. Due to the time constraints only one topic can be covered. Options are,

Basic Camera Skills, a discussion on Shutter Speed, Aperture and ISO and the effect each has,
OR
Basic editing skills, using photoshop elements, learn how to do basic editing, basic layers, resizing and saving.

The choice is yours! See link here to chose you preferred course, which ever is most popular will be ran, the other can be ran later in the year if there is interest. Please vote before midnight 6th January.

See you all at our next meeting on the 10th January, in St Josephs Resource Centre, Boyle at 8pm.
