Season's Greetings Everyone!
Don't forget that our monthly motivation for members is for 'Christmas' . That can be anything you like, so long as it has a Christmas theme! The deadline for submissions is January 1st 2010. As always, you can submit up to two pictures which will then be included in a slideshow at our next meeting, Tuesday January 12th in the Royal Hotel, Boyle. Please make sure you format your pictures properly and include your name and the name of the photograph in the file name.
Our quarterly competition is 'Wintertime' and the deadline for that is January 31st 2010. For the competition you can again submit two images, but this time you must also include the category you are in (beginner, intermediate or advanced) in the file name, alongside your name and the title of the picture. Good Luck!

Club member Martina Morris is helping to fund her forthcoming Touch Ireland charity trip to Africa through sales of her photographs in Boyle's new eco-shop, The Greenway Emporium. She has already made some well-deserved sales and hopes for more. Other members can also sell their photographs through The Greenway Emporium – just call in for details.
Season's greetings to everyone – may you enjoy the festive season, and have a happy and peaceful Christmas, and good health and happiness in the coming year!

Eagles Flying - Photoshoot - 15th November 2009
So how just how did we manage to fix such good weather for our photo-shoot to 'Eagles Flying', the Irish Raptor Research Centre in Ballymote, County Sligo on Sunday? After our last grey, rainy day out to Drumcliffe, we were hoping for some better weather and against the odds, we headed off in the sunshine to photograph a flying display of eagles, owls and other birds of prey. Although closed for the winter, the Centre opened especially for the 31 members who came out.
The Centre is home to 350 animals and birds from 75 different species including a Harris Hawk that was partial to Peter's hat and a saddleback pig that liked the look of Tony! We enjoyed a lively commentary from Lothar Muschketat, assisted by his wife Regina, son Alex, and helper Stephen, and watched eagles, owls, hawks and vultures swoop and dive overhead for rewards of food.
The Centre is a sanctuary for injured and endangered animals and birds – and we heard how there has been an upsurge of abandoned owls after doting parents copied the Harry Potter books and bought their children pet owls, but then couldn't care for them. The Centre is also temporary home to some gannets and a swan who will fly back into the wild when they are fit enough.
The fine weather meant we were lucky to have an outdoor flying display - the Centre now offers winter-time indoor displays in a purpose-built building on the site. If you missed the shoot, Eagles Flying is well worth a visit – a beautiful setting, lots of birds and animals to view and pet (guinea pigs, rabbits, donkeys and others), and the live show is very entertaining. Visitors can see indoor birds of prey flying displays from December 1st until Christmas Eve, at 6pm daily.

Boyle Camera Club occupied a stand at this year's Boyle Summer Festival. The event has been a great success and a credit to the organising committee and all who took part in the many events and competitions. The club was suitably represented, thanks to Chairperson, Sean O'Dowd, Conor Dowling and Louise Cole, who assembled the stand and used it as a forum to promote the club and its activities.

Club Meeting 8th July 2009
Taking advantage of a very fine evening, this month's meeting deviated slightly from the usual format and consisted of an informal photo shoot about Boyle. Members met at the earlier time of 7.30pm on the Crescent and broke into a number of groups. The promise of a light-filled evening was short lived however as the unexpected darkening clouds played havoc with ISO, Aperture and Shutter Speed settings and rickety tripods! However, this did not take away from an event that was as much about getting out and talking about light and photography as much as it was about attempting to capture it. Members regrouped at the Moving stairs to discuss their exploits over a sociable drink and contemplate the forth coming exhibition at the end of the month.

Club Meeting - Wednesday 10th June
This month's main presentation was delivered by Competitions Secretary, Conor Dowling. Conor, who was recently awarded his Licentiate from the Irish Photographic Federation, discussed the process of preparing for the IPF Distinctions. He presented his 'panel' of 10 printed photos based on a 'Wildlife' theme and brought the club through the submission criteria. Conor is hopeful that his success will encourage other club members to consider preparing for the Distinctions awards and he is happy to advise interested members in a formal workshop in advance of the next awards selection due to take place in October.
