Club Meeting - 10th July 2012

Motivation Winners July 2012
This month's Motivation winners are; top left - Aveen Neilan, bottom left - Margaret Dolan and right - Brian Munnelly.

Presentation
This month's presentation consisted of a tripartite photo critique by Margaret Dolan, Andy Rimmer and Paraic Brennan. Each were required to select one of their own photos and describe the process of choosing a location, point-of-view, camera settings and processing. Margaret focused on a single image of Glencar Waterfall. Andy selected a series of images that told the story of the transition from stillness to turbulance on a stretch of the river Nile. Paraic's shot was a low-light interior and his emphasis was on post-production using 'Aperture'. A very stimulating and informative discussion and critique developed. It was very interesting to see the diverse range of approaches to the presentation brief. Excellent!

Motivation
The Motivation theme for July was “Creativity”. Debbie McCormack and John Walshe judged the entries and presented the results with a short critique on each. See all entries HERE.
The winners in each section were;

Advanced
  • “Apple iPod” - Brian Munnelly
  • “Memory” - Des O'Dwyer
  • “Droplets” - Brian Munnelly

Well done to all who entered.

The motivation theme for our SEPTEMBER meeting, chosen by our judges, is 'BOOK TITLE'. Members are asked to consider the title of a book and present a photo that reflects it.
Submit photos to info@boylecameraclub.com on or before FRIDAY 7th SEPTEMBER.

Group Presentations
During the meeting, the Advanced and Intermediate Groups combined for a presentation given by Tony Murphy on the subject of 'Photographic Typologies'. Tony defined the meaning of the term and illustrated it with historical references to the work of Karl Blossfeldt, August Sander, The Becher's and Donovan Wylie. He showed some samples of his interpretation of 'photographic typology' and set the challenge to members to consider and shoot their own 'Typology' and present a set of 9 photos at the September meeting.

Des O'Dwyer discussed the issue of camera Shutter Speed with the Beginner Group. Des has been kind enough to share the transcript of his presentation for all HERE.

BCC Exhibition in Association with Boyle Arts Festival - Selection of Photos

Last night, the club committee selected the photos to be printed from the 35 members submissions to this year's exhibition at the Boyle Arts Festival. If any member would like to take part they should send their photos to Margaret immediately (details here), late submissions will not be accepted after Friday 6th of July.

This year we have revised the existing format of printing and framing as follow;
  • Members photos will be printed to 16" x 10.5" (3:2) or 16" x 12" (4:3) aspect ratio. This is larger than the standard A4 size in previous years.
  • All frames will be 20" x 16".
  • Members will pay €30.00 towards costs and will have their printed and framed photo returned to them after the exhibition. The club will subsidise any additional cost in this regard. Members will pay the entry fee at the next club meeting on Tuesday 10th July.
  • The committee will hang the exhibition in Boyle Library which will be officially opened on Thursday evening, 26th July. Members are welcome to bring their friends and family.
  • All images submitted will be presented as a slideshow during the exhibition, this has proven very popular in previous years.
  • This year, the club have the opportunity to exhibit additional framed photos as a window display in one of the local shops. The committee suggested that work from the current exhibition at Gleeson's in Roscommon Town, be requisitioned for this. If members have other photos they would like to include in the window display, they should bring them to the next club meeting. In the event of oversubscription, a selection process will occur.
  • Exhibiting members are asked to 'sit' the exhibition for a brief period during the festival. A rota will be drawn up at the next club meeting. Should any member be unable to do this, they must nominate someone else to sit in their place.
  • Proceeds from sales will be donated to the designated charities.
  • The exhibition will run for the duration of the Boyle Arts Festival.
Full details regarding the exhibition will be disclosed at the next club meeting. Thank you all for you submissions. We look forward to seeing you on Tuesday.
