Club Meeting - Tuesday 12th February

Chairperson, Andy Rimmer, opened the meeting and discussed a number of important events that will take place in the months ahead;
  • It looks likely that the annual weekend away club photo shoot will now take place during the May Bank Holiday Weekend between Friday 3rd and Sunday 5th .... there might be an option to extend the shoot to Monday 6th of May if members were so inclined. This year we will be taking on Inis Mór.
  • This month's club photo shoot will take place at Strokestown House on Sunday 24th February. Members can car pool by meeting on the Crescent in Boyle at 10am or meet in the car park at Strokestown at 10.30am. We have permission to photograph all areas and aspects of the house up to mid-day.
  • Club members are invited to exhibit photographs at Lough Key Forest park during St. Patrick's weekend - 16th March (Patrick's Day is on Sunday 17th this year). Print sizes can be between A4 and A3 (larger if you wish?). Photos must be window mounted with white/off white card and have backing board. Mount should be a minimum of 3-inches about the photo. In April, club members are asked to exhibit framed photos in Coffey's Coffee Shop, Carrick-on-Shannon. More on this later.
  • Jason Mallard is hoping to run Adobe Lightroom classes for club members in the near future. Those interested should notify Jason via the club forum HERE.

5-minute 'How did you do that!' Photo Presentation
Brian Munnelly discussed how to capture water droplets using a basic but very effective home-studio set-up that included off-camera flash and card reflectors.
He showed a number of variations on this subject which included capturing water crowns and droplets on the back of a CD. All very doable when the weather is not conducive to venturing outside.

Fr. Frank Browne
Presentation
Tony Murphy discussed the early life and work of one of Ireland's most famous photographers, Fr. Frank Browne. Browne was 80 when he died in 1960 leaving a legacy of 42,000 images behind, many only coming to light since 1985 when Edward O'Donnell discovered a trunk in the basement of the Jesuit House in Dublin containing a treasure trove of Browne's precious negatives. Subsequently, many books on Fr. Browne's work have been published world wide and his contribution to photography  has regularly been compared to that of Robert Doisneau and Henri Cartier-Bresson. Fr. Browne will be best remembered for his photos of Titanic's fatal maiden voyage. He was a passenger on the ship when it sailed from Southampton to Cobh in April 1912. Tony focused on Browne's Titanic images with a promise to return another time to discuss other aspects of Fr. Browne's work.
